Chapter 12

Nihls found it challenging to look at Lana. The left side of her face was covered in blood and bruises from the merciless beating. He held back tears as he watched Failean remove Lana’s left eyeball and place it in a small metal dish. Nihls had to turn away. He couldn’t believe the brutality. Drossi mercilessly crushed Lana’s eyeball and shattered her orbital bone. Failean carefully cleaned the wound, put a thick layer of gauze inside the eye socket, and covered it with a square sterile bandage. Nihls began to weep as he looked at the eye in the dish and Lana’s bandaged face.

“It’s my fault. I should have acted sooner; I could have helped both of them. I know I could’ve done more,” Nihls sobbed as he stared at Lana’s bruised face and broken body.

Failean felt great sorrow and empathy for Nihls. She could sense his agony as he looked at Lana and Dan, blaming himself for their injuries. Failean reached out and took Nihls’ hand. She closed her eyes and focused on relieving Nihls’ pain but found breaking through his remorse difficult. She spoke softly in his ear, “Find your peace.”

Nihls felt calmness surging through his body.

“Now go fly the plane so that I can heal your friends,” Failean told Nihls as she gazed deeply into his bloodshot watery eyes. Failean bowed her head, doubtful she could save Dan.

Nihls returned to the cockpit with little confidence that he could make it to Area 151 fast enough to save both. His anger festered thinking about the evil that could do such damage to Lana. Nihls knew they were all doomed if Dan didn’t survive the flight. ‘It will all be over.’

He thought, wiping tears. The radio crackled, startling Nihls back into reality. Hearing Fenn’s voice, Nihls barked into the mic, “Go ahead, Fenn.”

“I have everything; how are Dan and Lana?” Fenn asked reluctantly with little confidence.

“They are alive for now, but maybe not much longer,” Nihls struggled to say.

“They’re both strong; give it time. Failean will do everything she can to save them,” Fenn continued, “I will be back at the facility after meeting with President Winslow. Please let me know if anything changes.”

Nihls wasn’t reassured, but he knew Failean would do her best to save both, if possible. He jumped in his seat when he heard an alarm in the cabin. Engaging the autopilot, he rushed back to Failean. Nihls stood motionless as he saw Failean in a panic, working feverishly on Dan as the alarm continued to sound.

“What is it? What’s going on?” Nihls shrieked.

“His left lung is damaged, and his heart was punctured in three places. His heart is failing.

The blunt force trauma to his sternum must have driven a cracked rib through his lung and heart. I’m surprised he’s even alive,” Failean said, a little panicked as she cut a large incision in Dan’s chest.

Nihls screamed,” He’s dying, do something!”

Failean grabbed Nihls by the wrist and softly spoke, “Calm.”

Nihls instantly calmed, sat, and remained silent.
